NAACP son las siglas de National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (Asociación Nacional para el Avance del Pueblo de Color) fué fundada el 12 de febrero de 1909 por un grupo de activistas multirraciales estadounidense que respondían al nombre de "The Call." (La Llamada), inicialmente se llamaron asimismos National Negro Committee (Comité Nacional Negro).

La más antigua y más grande organización de derechos civiles de EE.UU. Fue fundada en 1909 para asegurar la igualdad política, educacional, social y económica de los afroamericanos.

W.E.B. Du Bois e Ida B. Wells estuvieron entre sus 60 fundadores. Con sede en Baltimore, Md., la NAACP ha emprendido litigios, actividades políticas y programas de educación pública. En 1939 organizó el Fondo (independiente) para la defensa legal y la educación como su brazo jurídico, el que entabló una demanda en favor del término de la segregación racial en las escuelas en la causa Brown v. Board of Education (1954). Durante la segunda guerra mundial presionó por el término de la segregación racial en las fuerzas armadas, lo que se consiguió en 1948. En 1967, su asesor jurídico, Thurgood Marshall, se convirtió en el primer magistrado afroamericano de la Corte Suprema de EE.UU.
